Sherlock - The AI Detector: Privacy Policy
Effective date: October 13, 2026

Summary: Sherlock analyzes content on your device. We do not collect, transmit, sell or share your content or personal data.

1. What Sherlock accesses, and why

  • Content you check: images, videos and text you choose to analyze in the popup. They are processed on your device and are not uploaded.
  • The current tab: only when you click Summarize, Ask this page or Use selection. Sherlock reads that tab’s visible text or your selection, processes it on your device, and does not keep or send it.
  • Facebook, X and YouTube: while the scanner is on for a site, Sherlock reads the post’s text and image, or the video’s ID, to analyze them locally and show a badge. You can turn each site off, or pause Sherlock, from the popup.
  • Image downloads: to analyze a post’s photo or a video’s thumbnail, Sherlock downloads that public image from the platform’s image servers (fbcdn.net, twimg.com, ytimg.com). This is the same file your browser already shows you. The request is made without your cookies or login. Like any browser image request, the platform’s servers can see it. Sherlock sends nothing else.

2. What is stored on your device
Using Chrome’s local storage, Sherlock saves your settings (on/off and per-site toggles), a count of checks used, and your 10 most recent... [see note]

Correction: the extension keeps up to 25 recent reports. Use this sentence instead: “...and up to 25 recent detection reports you opened, each containing the scores, the page address, the time, and a small thumbnail of the analyzed image.”

This data never leaves your device. Uninstalling Sherlock or clearing its data removes it.

3. What we do not do
We do not collect or transmit your content, browsing history or personal information. We do not use analytics, advertising or tracking. We do not sell or share data, and we do not use data for creditworthiness, lending or any purpose unrelated to Sherlock’s single purpose (detecting AI-generated content). Sherlock’s use of information follows the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements.

4. Permissions

  • storage: saves settings and recent reports locally.
  • activeTab and scripting: read the current tab’s text after you click.
  • offscreen: runs the AI models on your device.
  • Site access (Facebook, X, YouTube and their image servers): show scan badges and download the images to analyze.

5. Children
Sherlock is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect their data.

6. Changes
If this policy changes, we’ll update the date above. If we ever add features that send data off your device, we’ll ask first.
